- BIOGRAPHY
Robert was born about 1240, the son and heir of Hugh de Vere, 4th earl of Oxford, and Hawise de Quincy. With his wife Alice de Sanford, daughter of Gilbert de Sanford and Lorette La Zouche, he had three sons, and a daughter Joane who married William de Warren.
Robert was among the followers of Simon de Montfort during the Second Barons' War, and was with Simon's son Hugh when Edward I of England attacked Kenilworth Castle prior to the Battle of Evesham. Robert's title and property were forfeited, but restored shortly afterwards by the Dictum of Kenilworth.
Robert died before 7 September in 1296. He was succeeded by his son Robert as the 6th earl of Oxford. The latter married Margaret Mortimer, daughter of Sir Robert Mortimer, one of the victors at Evesham, and Maud de Braose. His only son Thomas died before him, and when Robert died in 1331, he was succeeded by his nephew John de Vere, son of his brother Alfonso, as 7th earl of Oxford.
